The medical team at Burjeel Hospital, Abu Dhabi, initiated high-dose corticosteroid therapy, the cornerstone treatment for this condition. After the initial high doses, the steroid was tapered carefully over several weeks to suppress the immune reaction while allowing safe recovery.

“Within 24 hours, the fever subsided. Within 48 hours, the patient felt significantly better, with improvement in joint pain and energy levels. Laboratory markers improved in parallel,” Dr. Niyas Khalid, Specialist, Internal Medicine, said.

Dr. Khalid said that AOSD is extremely difficult to diagnose because of its rarity and resemblance to other infections. “It mimics many life-threatening diseases such as severe infections, autoimmune disorders, liver disease, and even cancer. It’s often under-recognised, particularly in regions where fever is commonly attributed to infectious causes.”

At the hospital, the patient underwent a series of tests to rule out other possibilities. A major challenge was his body not having rashes, a feature often described in textbooks, but frequently absent or difficult to detect in individuals with darker complexion, the doctor added.

“When affected by AOSD, the patient’s immune system becomes overactive and attacks itself, causing widespread inflammation. If not diagnosed and treated at the right time, the disease can progress to severe complications such as organ damage, chronic inflammatory arthritis, liver failure, or a potentially fatal immune storm known as macrophage activation syndrome. In this case, early intervention was life-altering and, potentially, life-saving,” Dr. Khalid added.

The technology, known as PillSense, is a swallowable diagnostic capsule that uses light absorption technology to detect the presence of blood within the gastrointestinal tract in real time. Once swallowed, it transmits this data wirelessly to an external receiver monitored by clinicians, delivering results in under ten minutes. This enables rapid, data-informed decisions on whether urgent intervention is required.

For patients, this means a more comfortable and reassuring experience – minimising reliance on traditional diagnostic procedures, such as endoscopy, where they are not immediately required, while reducing anxiety and waiting times in emergency departments. Patients can receive clarity about their condition within minutes, rather than hours.

For clinicians, the technology supports faster, more confident decision-making in high-pressure emergency settings. By reducing diagnostic uncertainty, it enables more precise triaging and prioritisation of critical cases, improving both care quality and patient safety.

At a system level, this innovation represents a shift in how emergency care is delivered, moving from procedure-led pathways to real-time, data-driven decision-making. This enhances resource utilisation, reduces pressure on emergency departments, and enables faster, more efficient care across the network.

During its pilot phase at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, the use of PillSense supported clinicians in determining when invasive procedures were not immediately required in 86 per cent of assessed cases. Patients presenting to emergency departments with suspected upper gastrointestinal bleeding often require rapid evaluation, although many cases do not ultimately require urgent endoscopic intervention, demonstrating its potential to improve patient experience while optimising clinical workflows.

Dr Marwan Al Kaabi, Chief Executive Officer of Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, said: “In emergency care, speed and clarity are critical. This technology provides clinicians with rapid, reliable insights, allowing them to make informed decisions with confidence and ensure patients receive the right care at the right time.”

The expansion is supported by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, which continues to accelerate the adoption of advanced healthcare technologies as part of a fully integrated, data-driven health system.

Dr. Asma Ibrahim Al Mannaei, Executive Director of the Health Life Sciences Sector at the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, said: “Abu Dhabi continues to lead in adopting innovations that directly enhance patient care and system performance. This milestone reflects our ability to move beyond innovation as a concept, and instead implement solutions that deliver real, measurable impact for our community.”

The introduction of this technology reflects the strong collaboration between regulators and healthcare providers, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a global hub capable of scaling innovation into practical, patient-centered solutions.

As thetechnology becomes available to patients across the emirate, it marks another step towards a healthcare model that is faster, more precise, and less invasive, demonstrating what healthcare can look like when innovation is designed around human needs.

The accreditation represents international recognition of Abu Dhabi’s national capabilities in the accurate detection of measles and rubella cases and rapid response readiness, supporting efforts to eliminate both diseases while strengthening the UAE’s disease surveillance and prevention systems.

The recognition followed a comprehensive external assessment conducted by WHO experts, covering laboratory quality performance, biosafety standards, and diagnostic accuracy, reaffirming the laboratory’s commitment to the highest international standards in infectious disease diagnostics.

The laboratory applies advanced serological and molecular diagnostic techniques that help accelerate case detection, enhance surveillance efficiency, and support data-driven public health decision-making. It operates as part of Abu Dhabi’s connected smart health ecosystem, where laboratory intelligence is transformed into actionable insights that enable early surveillance and coordinated response through the Unified Medical Operations Command Center and relevant authorities, helping strengthen preparedness against health risks.

His Excellency Dr Rashid Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, said: “This accreditation reflects Abu Dhabi’s vision to build a proactive health system with the highest levels of readiness and the ability to protect communities. It also demonstrates the emirate’s continued investment in advanced infrastructure, national talent, and internationally recognised standards.

“Joining the global measles and rubella laboratory network reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a trusted partner in international disease surveillance and response efforts, while advancing its contribution to a healthier, more resilient future.”

This milestone adds to the strong track record of Abu Dhabi’s Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory, which is also recognised by the WHO as a National Influenza Centre, reflecting its continued expansion in advanced diagnostics and genomic sequencing, and its important role in supporting prevention and response efforts across the UAE.

Through continued investment in national laboratory capacity and future readiness, Abu Dhabi is advancing a more resilient and responsive health model that protects communities, enhances quality of life, and contributes to regional and global public health.

Held during Cancer Survivors Month, the inspiring community gathering brought together cancer patients, survivors, their families, and healthcare teams to celebrate stories of resilience, recovery, and hope.

The event was attended by H.E. Dr. Sedra Rashid Al Mansouri, Member of the Federal National Council, and H.E. Sheikh Dr. Salem Mohammed Hamad Balrakkad Alameri, Chairman of the Board, Emirates Cancer Society, alongside senior leaders and healthcare professionals from BCI, reaffirming the importance of community partnership in supporting cancer patients and survivors.

A Moment of Hope for Patients and Survivors

The event honored 15 cancer survivors who successfully completed their treatment journeys across various types of cancer. In a deeply emotional moment, each survivor rang the ‘Bell of Hope’ in the presence of their families, physicians, and nursing teams who had accompanied them throughout their treatment journey, symbolizing the end of a challenging chapter and the beginning of a new life filled with optimism and renewed purpose.

At the panel discussion, several survivors shared their personal experiences and treatment journeys, speaking candidly about the challenges they faced and the determination that helped them through recovery. Their inspiring stories delivered powerful messages of hope to patients and families in attendance.

H.E. Dr. Sedra Rashid Al Mansouri emphasized that such humanitarian initiatives reflect the UAE’s enduring commitment to enhancing quality of life and supporting patients and their families. “The initiative is a celebration of the human spirit and its remarkable ability to overcome adversity. It is also a community message that highlights the importance of solidarity and psychological support alongside medical care. Initiatives such as these inspire hope among patients and promote a culture of optimism, resilience, and determination to overcome cancer,” she said.

Commenting on the occasion, Prof. Humaid Al Shamsi, CEO of BCI, said the initiative reflects the vision that the cancer journey does not end with the completion of medical treatment but continues through psychological support, social care, and the reintegration of survivors into the community. “Witnessing survivors ring the ‘Bell of Hope’ today helps every patient believe that recovery is possible, and that behind every story of pain, lies a story of courage and success that deserves to be shared. At Burjeel Cancer Institute, we are committed to delivering a comprehensive model of care that places people at the center of everything we do, combining advanced medical treatments with psychological and social support. We firmly believe that hope is an essential partner in the healing journey, and that survivors sharing their experiences provides patients with additional strength and confidence to continue their own journey with optimism and resilience,” he said.

The event also featured a variety of interactive activities and community engagement programs that provided the participants with opportunities to connect, exchange experiences, and support one another in an atmosphere of encouragement and positivity.

By promoting hope as an integral component of the recovery journey, ‘Circle of Hope’ aligns with the UAE’s vision of enhancing quality of life and advancing a patient-centered healthcare system.

As the technology becomes available to patients across the emirate, it marks another step towards a healthcare model that is faster, more precise, and less invasive, demonstrating what healthcare can look like when innovation is designed around human needs.

In the study, published in Advanced Healthcare Materials, the team introduced the “Lily” stent, a device inspired by natural geometry and developed using a design framework called PETALS (Personalized Endoscopic Transmural Abscess Leak Solution). The Lily design features a six-part, flower-like structure that creates more efficient pathways for fluid drainage.

Laboratory testing showed the new design increased drainage flow by approximately 30 percent compared with commonly used cylindrical commercial stents. The researchers found that the shape of the stent’s cross-section plays a critical role in how effectively fluid moves, more so than factors such as anchoring features or simply increasing the tube’s diameter.

“The key insight is that the geometry of the tube’s cross-section fundamentally determines how fast fluid moves through it,” said Khalil Ramadi, Assistant Professor of Bioengineering at NYU Abu Dhabi and Global Network Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and the study’s senior author. “We’re not just making it out of a different material. We’re changing the shape to make it work better.”

“Our work shifts the focus from placing a stent to engineering its function at a structural level,” said Parima Phowarasoontorn, a research assistant in Ramadi’s NYU Abu Dhabi lab and the paper’s first author. “Instead of simple tubes, we introduce cross-sectional designs that improve drainage while remaining compatible with existing endoscopic delivery procedures.”

“This collaboration with NYU Abu Dhabi reflects our commitment at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi to advancing clinically relevant research that directly improves patient care,” said Dr. Sawsan Abdel-Razig, Chief Academic Officer at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. “By bringing together engineering innovation and clinical expertise, this research demonstrates how academic partnerships can help advance meaningful solutions to complex surgical challenges.”

The Lily stent is also more flexible than existing polyethylene devices, which may improve patient comfort and reduce tissue damage. Early testing suggests comparable biocompatibility to current materials, while its structure allows for manufacturing using conventional methods without requiring specialized 3D printing infrastructure.

While the device has so far been tested in simulations and laboratory models, further studies will be needed before it can move toward clinical use. If successful, the innovation could help reduce recovery times and the need for repeat procedures for patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

In addition to Ramadi and Phowarasoontorn, the paper’s authors are Yongbin Ko, Sungyun Sohn, Heba Tageldeen Naser, Abdel-Hameed Dabbour, Batoul Khlaifat, Oraib Al-Ketan, and Mohamed Ali, all of NYU Abu Dhabi; Juan S. Barajas-Gamboa, Juan P. Pantoja, Ahmed AlZubaidi, Carlos Abril Vega, and John Rodriguez of the Digestive Disease Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi; and Matthew Kroh of the Digestive Disease Institute at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Funding for the research was provided by NYU Abu Dhabi and Sandooq Al Watan.

This is not simply a laboratory filled with equipment. It is a space engineered with intention, where every pathway, process, and platform has been built around accuracy, speed, and trust. From the moment a sample is received to the second a result reaches a physician, each step has been carefully structured to reduce delays and improve outcomes.

With an expanded in-house test menu and scalable infrastructure, the laboratory significantly reduces dependency on external referrals, allowing physicians to act quickly and confidently. For patients and their families, this means less waiting, fewer uncertainties, and more reassurance during moments that matter most.

Strategically located at the heart of the hospital’s 71-bed facility, the laboratory plays a central role in daily clinical decision-making. As it grows, it is designed to evolve into a central reference laboratory serving multiple facilities under Yas Clinic, creating harmonised testing standards and seamless diagnostic support across the network.

“The laboratory is the quiet hero of modern medicine,” said Dr. Maysoon Al Karam, Chief Medical Officer. “Every accurate result gives our physicians clarity and our patients confidence. By investing in advanced diagnostics, we are investing directly in safer decisions and better outcomes for every person who walks through our doors.”

Already fully operational, the laboratory continues to expand its capabilities while progressing toward international accreditations and global best practices. With continuous upgrades and innovation, it is not only meeting today’s healthcare demands but also anticipating the needs of tomorrow.

Dr. Amina Omar Ibrahim, Laboratory Manager, stated, “For us, this is about more than technology. It’s about dignity, trust, and giving our community access to world-class care close to home. When science is built around people, healthcare becomes more human — and that is exactly what this laboratory represents.”

In a city like Dubai, where healthcare standards are high, fertility doctors play a crucial role in improving treatment outcomes. If you are searching for the Top Fertility Doctors Dubai or the best fertility doctor in Dubai, it’s important to understand how their expertise directly impacts success rates.

Fertility treatment is not just about procedures like IVF. Instead, it involves careful planning, advanced technology, and continuous support. The right doctor combines all these elements to increase your chances of a successful pregnancy.

This guide explains the key ways a fertility doctor in Dubai helps improve success rates.

Early and Accurate Diagnosis

A strong fertility journey always begins with the right diagnosis. Instead of jumping directly into treatment, a skilled doctor takes time to understand the root cause of infertility.

They perform detailed tests such as hormone analysis, ultrasounds, and semen evaluation. As a result, they can identify the exact issue affecting fertility.

When the problem is clearly understood, the treatment becomes more effective. This targeted approach helps improve success rates significantly.

Tailored Treatment Strategies

No two fertility cases are the same. Therefore, personalized treatment is one of the most important factors in achieving success.

Fertility Doctor in Dubai at the Best Life Fertility Center creates a plan based on your unique condition, age, and medical history. This ensures that the treatment is both effective and safe.

For example, some couples may need simple treatments like medication or IUI. Others may require advanced procedures like IVF or ICSI. Choosing the right method increases the chances of success.

Use of Advanced Fertility Technology

Modern technology plays a major role in improving fertility outcomes. Many clinics in Dubai use advanced tools and techniques to enhance treatment success.

These include high-resolution imaging, genetic testing, and improved embryo selection methods. As a result, doctors can make better decisions during each stage of treatment.

In addition, advanced technology helps reduce risks and improve the overall quality of care.

Experience and Specialized Knowledge

Experience is one of the key reasons why the Top Fertility Doctors Dubai achieve better results.

An experienced doctor has handled a wide range of cases, including complex fertility issues. Therefore, they can quickly identify challenges and adjust treatment plans when needed.

Moreover, their expertise allows them to make informed decisions at every step, which improves the chances of success.

High-Quality Laboratory Standards

Fertility treatments like IVF depend heavily on laboratory conditions. A well-equipped lab ensures that eggs, sperm, and embryos are handled carefully.

Top fertility clinics in Dubai maintain strict quality standards. They use controlled environments to support embryo development.

As a result, better lab conditions lead to higher success rates.

Close Monitoring During Treatment

Fertility treatment requires regular monitoring. Doctors track your progress through blood tests, scans, and check-ups.

This helps them understand how your body is responding to the treatment. If needed, they can adjust medications or procedures.

Such timely changes improve the effectiveness of the treatment and increase the chances of success.

Focus on Embryo Health

Embryo quality is a key factor in successful pregnancy outcomes. Fertility doctors use advanced methods to select the healthiest embryos.

In some cases, genetic testing is done to check for abnormalities. This ensures that only strong embryos are used for transfer.

As a result, the chances of implantation and a healthy pregnancy improve.

Guidance on Lifestyle Changes

Lifestyle also affects fertility. A good doctor will guide you on how to improve your overall health before and during treatment.

This may include advice on diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management. Small changes can have a big impact on fertility outcomes.

Therefore, following your doctor’s guidance can increase your chances of success.

Emotional and Mental Support

Fertility treatment can be emotionally challenging. Stress and anxiety can affect both your mental health and treatment outcomes.

The fertility doctor in Dubai understands this and provides emotional support throughout the journey.

Some clinics also offer counseling services to help patients cope with stress. Feeling supported can make the process smoother and more positive.

Honest and Clear Communication

Clear communication builds trust between the doctor and the patient. A good fertility specialist explains every step in simple terms.

They also provide realistic expectations about success rates. This helps you stay informed and prepared throughout the treatment.

Honesty and transparency play a big role in creating a positive experience.

Post-Treatment Care and Follow-Up

Fertility care does not end after a procedure. Follow-up care is equally important for monitoring progress and ensuring success.

Doctors schedule regular check-ups to track your condition. They also provide guidance on what to do after treatment.

This continuous care improves overall outcomes and helps detect any issues early.

Final Thoughts

Improving fertility success rates requires a combination of expertise, technology, and personalized care. A skilled fertility doctor in Dubai brings all these elements together to support your journey.

From accurate diagnosis to follow-up care, every step is carefully managed to increase your chances of success.

If you are looking for the Top Fertility Doctors Dubai, focus on experience, communication, and patient-centered care. Choosing the fertility doctor in Dubai can make your journey smoother, more hopeful, and more successful.
