The DMD, a rare genetic condition that gradually weakens the muscles, occurs in about 1 in every 3,500–5,000 male births worldwide. Children with DMD may begin life walking and playing normally, but over time, movements like climbing stairs, running or standing become harder. Without timely care, many eventually lose their ability to walk and later develop breathing and heart complications.

Doctors say Elevidys is an advanced gene therapy available in the UAE among a few other countries globally.

At BMC, one of the few centers in the country activated to offer the treatment, the boy’s case is being reviewed and treatment planned by a multidisciplinary team, led by Prof. Ayman W. El-Hattab, Consultant Clinical Genetics and Director of the Genetics and Rare Disease Centre, an expert in rare diseases and genetics.

Prof. Khaled Musallam, Chief of Cell and Gene Therapy and Hematology at Burjeel Cancer Institute, BMC, is also orchestrating collaborations between the various internal and external stakeholders involved in this case. He is leading Burjeel Holdings’ expansion and research in gene therapy for various rare genetic conditions, supporting the UAE’s vision of becoming a leading hub for innovative therapies globally.

Doctors say Elevidys helps the body produce a shorter but functional form of dystrophin, a protein that muscles need to stay strong. The treatment cannot reverse existing muscle damage, but can slow further muscle loss. Timing matters, especially for children who can still walk.

Before the therapy, they explain, patients must be screened for antibodies that could block safe delivery. Yigit tested negative, making him eligible for the treatment..

Behavioral science lies at the heart of Healthy Living’s approach, enabling a deeper understanding of how people make decisions in real-world contexts, and translating those insights into practical and targeted interventions. This ensures that Healthy Living initiatives are grounded in evidence and relevant to the lived realities of Abu Dhabi’s population.

His Excellency Dr Ahmed AlKhazraji, Executive Director of Healthy Living at the Department of Health, said: “One-size-fits-all approaches rarely deliver lasting impact– they don’t reflect the different ways people live their lives or the unique realities they navigate every day. Meaningful and sustainable behavioral change starts with listening – understanding the choices people face, and the environments that shape those choices. At Healthy Living, our focus is on translating these insights into action – designing policies, systems, and environments that respond directly to people’s needs.

“Through our collaboration with BSG, we are better able to understand communities’ needs and identify gaps in services they need. This approach helps inform what we design and deliver, ensuring interventions are targeted, effective, and focused on where they can achieve the greatest and most lasting impact for generations to come.”

Rasha Attar, Director of BSG at the Office of Development Affairs, said: “Since its inception, Healthy Living recognized the value of behavioral science in policy and has taken an evidence-led approach to shaping its initiatives. This collaboration is helping to build locally grounded insights that inform decision-making, support healthier outcomes across Abu Dhabi, and contribute to the growing international evidence base for behavioral science in policy”.

BSG’s work supported the development of Nutri-Mark, a front-of-pack nutrition grading label launched by the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre. The system classifies packaged food products from Grade A (highest nutritional value) to Grade E (lowest), enabling consumers to compare items within the same category and make more informed choices.

A key milestone in the collaboration has been the evaluation of front-of-package nutrition labels using BSG’s simulated online supermarket. The study, which engaged 2,733 UAE residents, found that product placement and clear labelling significantly influenced purchasing behavior, particularly staple items such as bread, where healthier options were more frequently selected.

Complementary research involving 4,000 UAE residents further demonstrated that nutritional labelling improves consumer understanding, increases the intention to choose healthier options, and generates positive sentiment. At the same time, the findings highlighted persistent misconceptions around dietary balance, reinforcing the importance of continued public awareness and education efforts.

This need is further reinforced by research conducted by BSG and Healthy Living, which assessed the impact of calorie labelling and food promotion on consumer choices in a simulated food environment involving 5,002 UAE residents. The study found that calorie labels, when combined with additional nutritional information, can significantly reduce the number of calories ordered. On average, participants selected approximately 114 fewer calories per meal, and 94 per cent supported the implementation of calorie labelling on menus.

Healthy Living, in partnership with the BSG, will continue to apply behavioral science to inform policy, strengthen research, and deliver targeted interventions that drive system-level change, shaping environments, expanding access, and making healthier choices easier and more natural in everyday life, while generating insights to support and inform similar initiatives across the UAE.

Unlike dry heat, humidity slows down the evaporation of sweat, making it harder for your body to cool itself efficiently. As a result, you may sweat more, lose essential fluids and electrolytes faster, and become dehydrated without realizing it. Whether you’re living in a humid climate like UAE, working outdoors, exercising, or traveling, staying hydrated is essential for maintaining your health, energy, and overall well-being.

Drink Water Regularly

The most effective way to stay hydrated is to drink water consistently throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. Thirst is often a late indicator of dehydration. Aim to sip water every 20–30 minutes during outdoor activities or prolonged exposure to humid weather. Keep a reusable water bottle with you to make hydration convenient wherever you go.

Replace Lost Electrolytes

Sweating doesn’t just cause water loss—it also depletes important minerals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. During extended periods of physical activity or excessive sweating, replenish these electrolytes by drinking oral rehydration solutions, electrolyte beverages, or consuming natural sources like coconut water, bananas, oranges, and yogurt. Maintaining electrolyte balance helps prevent muscle cramps, fatigue, and dizziness.

Eat Water-Rich Foods

Hydration comes from both beverages and food. Fruits and vegetables with high water content provide fluids along with essential vitamins and minerals. Excellent choices include watermelon, cucumber, strawberries, oranges, lettuce, celery, tomatoes, and grapes. Including these foods in your daily meals can significantly improve your hydration levels.

Limit Dehydrating Drinks

Certain beverages can contribute to fluid loss if consumed in excess. Drinks high in caffeine, alcohol, or sugar may increase dehydration, particularly during hot and humid weather. While moderate coffee or tea consumption is generally acceptable, balance each caffeinated or alcoholic beverage with additional water to compensate for fluid loss.

Dress for the Weather

Lightweight, loose-fitting, and breathable clothing made from cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics helps your body regulate temperature more effectively. Light-colored clothing reflects sunlight and reduces heat absorption, minimizing excessive sweating and fluid loss.

Avoid Peak Heat Hours

Whenever possible, schedule outdoor activities during the early morning or late evening when temperatures and humidity levels are lower. If you must be outside during the hottest part of the day, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to allow your body to cool down.

Monitor Your Hydration

Your urine color is one of the simplest indicators of hydration. Pale yellow urine generally indicates good hydration, while dark yellow or amber-colored urine often signals that you need more fluids. Other signs of dehydration include dry mouth, headache, dizziness, fatigue, muscle cramps, and reduced urine output. Address these symptoms immediately by drinking fluids and resting in a cool environment.

Increase Fluid Intake During Exercise

Physical activity significantly increases sweat production in humid conditions. Drink water before, during, and after exercise. For workouts lasting longer than an hour, consider electrolyte replacement beverages to restore both fluids and minerals lost through sweat.

Don’t Wait Until You’re Thirsty

Many people underestimate how quickly dehydration develops in humid weather because sweat evaporates less efficiently. Develop a habit of drinking small amounts of water consistently throughout the day, especially if you spend time outdoors or work in physically demanding environments.

Pay Special Attention to Vulnerable Groups

Children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with chronic medical conditions are more susceptible to dehydration. Ensure they have easy access to water, encourage frequent fluid intake, and monitor them closely during periods of high heat and humidity.

Staying hydrated in humid conditions requires more than simply drinking water when you’re thirsty. A combination of regular fluid intake, electrolyte replacement, water-rich foods, appropriate clothing, and smart scheduling of outdoor activities can help your body cope with the challenges of heat and humidity. By making hydration a daily habit and recognizing the early signs of dehydration, you can stay healthy, active, and comfortable even in the most humid environments.

An Emirati couple presented to SEHA’s Tawam Fertility Centre with a four-year history of primary infertility attributed to severe male factor infertility, confirmed through repeated semen analyses. Following comprehensive clinical evaluation, the husband underwent successful surgical sperm retrieval performed by the centre’s specialised urology team as part of its structured male infertility programme. In 2017, the couple completed an Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) cycle at Tawam Fertility Centre. Two high-quality embryos were transferred, resulting in a successful pregnancy and the birth of healthy twin boys. In 2023, the couple returned to SEHA’s Tawam Fertility Centre to pursue a second treatment cycle, which led to another successful pregnancy and the birth of a healthy baby boy.

This case demonstrates how advanced reproductive technologies, combined with a coordinated multidisciplinary approach, can offer effective solutions even in severe male infertility cases. SEHA’s Tawam Fertility Centre follows an integrated clinical model that brings together urology, reproductive endocrinology, genetics, andrology, and psychological support services to ensure comprehensive patient care.

Dr. Fathiya Al Faheem, Consultant in Reproductive Medicine at SEHA’s Tawam Fertility Centre, said: “This case reflects the strength of a truly integrated fertility care model. Severe male factor infertility can be clinically challenging, but with structured evaluation, advanced surgical sperm retrieval techniques, and precision ICSI, we are able to offer realistic and evidence-based pathways to parenthood. At SEHA’s Tawam Fertility Centre, our multidisciplinary collaboration ensures that couples receive comprehensive, personalised care to help transform years of uncertainty into measurable clinical success.”

With more than 34 years of experience, SEHA’s Tawam Fertility Centre is the first fertility centre established in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and remains one of the few facilities in the region providing comprehensive male infertility services under one roof. As part of SEHA Fertility Care, the Centre continues to build trust through measurable clinical outcomes, personalised treatment pathways, and patient-centred care.

This success also underscores the importance of prioritising male reproductive health, an area that is often under-recognised, through early diagnosis, advanced intervention, and holistic support. By combining surgical expertise with advanced ICSI technology, Tawam Fertility Centre reinforces SEHA’s commitment to delivering specialised, high-quality reproductive care and supporting families throughout their fertility journey.

This progress is built on an advanced digital infrastructure, intelligent technologies, and an integrated national framework for health data exchange that enhances the efficiency of medical services, improves the quality of care, accelerates access to treatment, and establishes an innovative, data-driven healthcare model.

The UAE’s digital health ecosystem leverages the latest technologies across every stage of healthcare delivery, from online appointment booking and telemedicine consultations to electronic health record management. It also employs artificial intelligence to support diagnosis, analyze medical data, and assist healthcare professionals in making clinical decisions, contributing to the continuous improvement of healthcare services and operational efficiency.

As part of this strategy, the UAE launched the Riayati platform, the unified national medical record system operated by the Ministry of Health and Prevention. The platform enables the secure exchange of health data among healthcare facilities nationwide, ensuring continuity of care, providing healthcare professionals with immediate access to patients’ medical histories, and reducing unnecessary duplicate tests and procedures. This, in turn, enhances service efficiency and improves the quality of patient care.

The Emirates Health Services (EHS) also relies on the Wareed system to manage electronic medical records and clinical operations across its hospitals and healthcare facilities. The system is integrated with the Riayati platform to facilitate health data exchange, strengthen the integration of medical information, and ensure the seamless transfer of data among healthcare entities while maintaining the highest standards of quality and privacy.

At the local level, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi has established a comprehensive health information exchange through the Malaffi platform, while the Emirate of Dubai has advanced this initiative through the NABIDH, A medical record exchange platform. Both platforms are connected to Riayati, enabling nationwide health information exchange. This integration has created an interconnected network of electronic health records that supports continuity of care, improves the efficiency of healthcare services, and strengthens data-driven clinical decision-making.

The UAE’s digital transformation has also extended to the development of smart healthcare services by enabling a wide range of services to be delivered electronically. These include appointment scheduling, prescription management, issuance of sick leave certificates, access to personal health records, and viewing laboratory test results.

These digital services provide a faster, more convenient experience for patients while improving service delivery and enhancing the overall quality of care.

Digital health has also played a significant role in expanding telemedicine services, allowing patients to receive medical consultations and follow-up care for many conditions without the need to visit healthcare facilities. This supports continuity of care, optimizes the use of healthcare resources, and broadens access to medical services.

Artificial intelligence has emerged as one of the primary drivers of digital transformation in the healthcare sector. AI is being used to analyze medical images, enable early disease detection, predict health complications, and process large-scale medical datasets. These capabilities support precision medicine, improve diagnostic accuracy, and facilitate personalized healthcare tailored to each patient’s unique health profile.

By 2026, digital health in the United Arab Emirates had evolved into a fully integrated ecosystem built upon interconnected health data, unified electronic medical records, artificial intelligence, smart healthcare services, and telemedicine.

This ecosystem is further strengthened by the integration of Riayati with Malaffi and NABIDH, as well as the connectivity of the Wareed system. Together, these initiatives enhance health data exchange, support data-driven clinical decision-making, improve the efficiency of the healthcare system, and reinforce the sector’s readiness to achieve the objectives of the “We the UAE 2031” Vision.

Announced at the BIO International Convention 2026 in San Diego, USA, the partnership aims to establish the Middle East’s first Eye Bank in Abu Dhabi, creating a critical new healthcare capability that will transform access to sight-restoring corneal transplantation across the UAE and wider region.

Globally, an estimated 10 million people live with bilateral corneal blindness, yet only one donor cornea is available for every 70 patients requiring transplantation. More than half of the world’s population has limited or no access to corneal transplantation services. As the region’s Living Lab for Life Sciences, Abu Dhabi is positioned to extend world-class corneal transplantation care to patients across the region.

The Abu Dhabi Biobank – Eye Bank marks a significant milestone in the development of advanced transplant and biobanking infrastructure in Abu Dhabi, helping extend world-class corneal transplantation care to patients across the region. Last year, DoH had partnered with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute to establish its first-ever international facility in Abu Dhabi, expanding access to Bascom Palmer’s globally renowned ophthalmic care, pioneering research, and outstanding medical education in the Emirate.

H.E. Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, said: “Abu Dhabi’s evolution as a global pioneer in specialized healthcare is rooted in our commitment to provide the community access to quality care and world-class medical expertise close to home. The Emirate’s partnership with the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute continues to raise the bar for excellence, strengthening our commitment to innovation, international collaboration, and new standards for care. Through this partnership, our ecosystem continues to champion a globally connected healthcare hub, leveraging cutting-edge technology and international standards to accelerate the delivery of next-generation, patient-centered care.”

By establishing local eye banking capabilities for the first time, the partnership aims to provide patients in the UAE timely and reliable access to sight restoring corneal transplants. This will reduce reliance on imported donor tissue, strengthen regional self-sufficiency, improve access to life-changing treatment and provide patients with a more reliable pathway to timely sight-restoring care. The eye bank will recover, process, preserve and distribute donor corneal tissue according to international standards, creating a secure and sustainable local supply chain from donor through to recipient. The capability is expected to significantly reduce the logistical challenges, supply uncertainty and delays associated with sourcing corneal tissue internationally, while enhancing quality assurance, traceability and patient outcomes.

Albarah El Khani, Chief Operating Officer, Integrated Health Solutions, M42, said: “The establishment of the Middle East’s first Eye Bank marks the creation of critical health infrastructure that will restore sight, reduce dependence on imported tissue and build long-term transplant capability for the region. Through Abu Dhabi Biobank, we are creating the foundations for a more self-sufficient, resilient and innovation-driven healthcare system. Partnering with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute ensures this capability is built to the highest international standards from day one, combining world-class expertise with Abu Dhabi’s ambition to lead the future of healthcare.”

The Abu Dhabi Biobank – Eye Bank will recover, process, preserve and distribute donor corneal tissue according to international standards, creating a secure and sustainable local supply chain from donor through to recipient. The capability is expected to significantly reduce the logistical challenges, supply uncertainty, and delays associated with sourcing corneal tissue internationally, while enhancing quality assurance, traceability and patient outcomes.

Dr. Zain Kenderian, MD, MBA, MStJ, Chief Executive Officer of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Abu Dhabi said, “Bascom Palmer has spent more than six decades advancing ophthalmic care, research, and education, and extending that expertise through international partnerships is core to our mission. This eye bank is foundational infrastructure for research, not simply a storage and logistics facility, and it will support transplantation science and clinical training in the region for years to come. We are proud to support the Abu Dhabi Biobank’s Eye Bank as it works to build sustainable, high quality corneal donation and transplantation capability for the region.”

The Abu Dhabi Biobank – Eye Bank will collaborate with Hayat, the UAE’s national organ donation initiative, on the recovery, processing, preservation and distribution of corneal tissue.

Recognized as the No. 1 eye hospital in the United States for the 24th time by U.S. News & World Report, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute brings more than six decades of pioneering expertise in ophthalmology, transplantation and eye banking. Through the collaboration, the Institute will support the development of clinical protocols, operational standards, workforce training, research and education, helping establish a center of excellence for corneal transplantation in Abu Dhabi and the wider region.

Together, Abu Dhabi Biobank and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute aim to build a sustainable ecosystem that restores vision, supports surgeons and serves the region more widely. This will be one of several capabilities within the Abu Dhabi Biobank, which includes the largest hybrid cord blood bank, a pan human biobank and a tumor bank, all designed to advance early detection, prevention, and personalized care.

For a long time, 37-year-old Maryam Al Rais adjusted her life around a condition she couldn’t fully control. The swelling in her leg was persistent, often painful, and increasingly difficult to ignore. Over time, it began to dictate small but significant choices, from how long she could stay on her feet to whether she felt comfortable leaving the house at all.

“It slowly took over my routine. Everything revolved around how I was feeling physically; some days I could cope, and others I simply couldn’t,” she said.

Eventually diagnosed with lymphedema, a chronic condition affecting the lymphatic system that causes persistent swelling, most commonly in the arms or legs, Maryam faced ongoing challenges with mobility, comfort, and overall wellbeing. After experiencing a recurrence following a previous unsuccessful procedure, she turned to Healthpoint for a more comprehensive treatment pathway, enrolling in a personalised programme tailored to support her long-term recovery and management.

“What stood out for me was that it wasn’t just about one solution,” she added. “It was the first time someone explained how everything connects, and what I could do long-term. Since the procedure I have reduced swelling and improved mobility, this has allowed me to return more comfortably to everyday activities that were previously difficult”

As part of this programme, and under the care of Dr. Nahla Al Mansoori, Head of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Healthpoint, Maryam’s treatment plan was designed to support both immediate recovery and long-term management of lymphedema.

While advances in super microsurgical interventions such as lymphatic venous anastomosis (LVA) and vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT) offer a physiological approach to restoring lymphatic drainage, they are most effective when delivered as part of a broader, multidisciplinary strategy rather than as standalone solutions. Maryam underwent LVA and VLNT in a procedure lasting approximately six hours, as part of a holistic treatment plan supported by rehabilitation, ongoing monitoring, and lifestyle guidance. Achieving optimal outcomes requires integration with comprehensive conservative care, including physiotherapy, compression therapy, psychological support and weight management.

“There is no single solution for lymphedema, which makes setting the right expectations an important part of care,” Dr. Nahla said. “At Healthpoint, our focus is on supporting patients beyond surgery, through a multidisciplinary approach that combines advanced microsurgical interventions with rehabilitation and long-term support to help improve mobility, ease the impact of the condition, and restore quality of life.”

Through its expanded plastic and reconstructive surgery programme, Healthpoint continues to strengthen its role as a leading centre in the UAE for lower extremity lymphedema, offering advanced super microsurgical interventions within a structured, multidisciplinary care model focused on long-term, sustainable outcomes.

Today, Maryam continues to follow her personalized care plan, with regular monitoring and support. She is now able to move more freely and return to daily routines with greater comfort and confidence.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new extension was attended by H.E. Dr. Fayeza Saif Nasir Alyafe, Executive Director of the Healthcare Quality Sector, Department of Health – Abu Dhabi; H.E. Khalifa Al Mazrouei, Group Chief Investment Officer, Abu Dhabi Capital Group (ADCG); H.E Abubaker Seddiq Al Khoori, Group Chief Executive Officer, ADCG and Dr. Mishal Al Qasimi, CEO, Specialized Rehabilitation Hospital and Health Shield Medical Center, along with senior leadership and employees of SRH.

The state-of-the-art facility, being developed adjacent to the existing hospital, will significantly expand SRH’s rehabilitation and specialty care platform. It will bring together inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient subspecialty services, orthopaedic and musculoskeletal care, neurosciences, sports medicine, physical medicine and cardiac rehabilitation within one coordinated model of care.

H.E Abubaker Seddiq Al Khoori, Group Chief Executive Officer, ADCG, said, “Healthcare investment plays a critical role in building the depth, resilience and future readiness of a health system. The expansion of Specialized Rehabilitation Hospital reflects our confidence in Abu Dhabi’s vision for specialised care and our commitment to supporting institutions that can scale excellence, retain complex care within the UAE and create lasting value for patients and communities. SRH’s next phase will strengthen an area of growing importance, bringing together expertise, infrastructure and service capacity in a way that supports the emirate’s continued development as a regional hub for advanced rehabilitation and recovery.”

H.E. Khalifa Al Mazrouei, Group Chief Investment Officer, ADCG, said, “This expansion reflects our long-term investment in building specialised healthcare capacity in Abu Dhabi. SRH has established a strong reputation for clinical excellence and rehabilitation outcomes, and this development will allow us to extend that impact to more patients across the UAE and the region. By combining advanced surgery, outpatient subspecialties, therapy services and rehabilitation within one purpose-built environment, we are creating a platform that supports both national healthcare priorities and Abu Dhabi’s medical tourism ambitions.”

Dr. Mishal Al Qasimi, CEO, Specialized Rehabilitation Hospital and Health Shield Medical Center, said, “At SRH, our organisational focus this year, Growth Through Learning, has shaped the way we are approaching this expansion. It is about learning from every patient journey, every family experience and every member of our multidisciplinary team, then turning that knowledge into stronger systems, better collaboration and more responsive care. The new extension is part of that evolution. It gives us the opportunity to translate years of clinical insight into an environment that supports more complex needs and raises the standard of rehabilitation care. As we grow, our priority is to ensure that each new service and space is shaped by learning and guided by the outcomes we want to achieve for the people we serve.”

Expected to be completed and operational by the end of 2028, the expansion will bring SRH’s total capacity to more than 230 inpatient rehabilitation beds, over 30 outpatient clinics and treatment rooms, and approximately 12 Bayt Al Qudra rehabilitation gyms. The expanded capacity will position SRH as the largest integrated rehabilitation hospital in the UAE, housing the nation’s highest number of inpatient rehabilitation beds, outpatient rehabilitation clinics, and rehabilitation gyms under one roof.

The new facility will also introduce additional outpatient subspecialty services in neurology, sports medicine, physical medicine and cardiac rehabilitation for both paediatric and adult patients. These services will provide advanced diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation pathways, enabling patients to access comprehensive specialised care in one location.

Another key component of the development is the addition of modern operating theatres, including the OR of the future. These facilities will support a comprehensive range of orthopaedic and musculoskeletal surgeries, connected to SRH’s rehabilitation programmes to enable smoother transitions from surgery to recovery, improve clinical outcomes and enhance the patient experience.

The project is aligned with Abu Dhabi Vision 2030, supporting the emirate’s goals to enhance healthcare quality, improve population health outcomes, reduce the need for patients to seek specialised treatment abroad, and develop sustainable, world-class healthcare infrastructure. The extension will also support Abu Dhabi’s medical tourism strategy by establishing a comprehensive centre of excellence for rehabilitation, orthopedic care, neurosciences, sports medicine and physical medicine.
