The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) and Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority (ADCDA) jointly unveiled a new generation of specialised smart ambulances, designed to support patients with complex medical needs requiring advanced care, from the earliest moments of emergency response through to their arrival at the appropriate healthcare facility.

The new fleet comprises 18 specialised ambulances, including mobile intensive care unit (ICU) ambulances, maternal and neonatal ambulances, and ambulances designed for patients with additional mobility and transport needs. Each has been purpose-built and equipped to respond to specific and complex emergency needs.

Integrated within the Unified Medical Operations Centre (UMOC), the introduction of these specialised smart ambulances further strengthens integration between emergency services and specialised medical capabilities, enabling each emergency case to be managed as a connected and continuous care journey.

By equipping emergency teams with specialised capabilities tailored to different patient needs, the initiative strengthens Abu Dhabi’s ability to provide the right level of care from the earliest critical moments of an emergency, reducing the time to appropriate intervention, strengthening continuity of care and enhancing patient safety.

Dr Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, said, “Behind every emergency is a person, a family and a moment where the right intervention can make all the difference. The new fleet includes ambulances equipped as Mobile Intensive Care units (ICU), featuring advanced medical equipment, including ultrasound systems, infusion pumps and ventilators, to support patients requiring critical care during transport.

The fleet also includes specialised ambulances for mothers and newborns, equipped with fully integrated incubators, ventilators and other essential medical equipment, enabling specialised care for both mother and baby throughout the transport journey.

The ambulances dedicated to transporting patients with severe obesity are equipped with specialised loading platforms and stretchers with a capacity of approximately 350 kilogrammes, enhancing safety during transport and providing equipment tailored to the specific needs of these patients.

The initiative reflects Abu Dhabi’s wider approach to health system resilience: preventing where possible, preparing continuously, connecting capabilities when they are needed and learning from every response to strengthen the system further.

Rather than viewing ambulances as standalone emergency assets, Abu Dhabi is building an integrated model in which specialised ambulances, healthcare professionals, emergency services, technology and infrastructure operate as one connected ecosystem. This enables earlier intervention, strengthens the quality and continuity of emergency care and supports better patient outcomes.

SEHA, a subsidiary of PureHealth, the largest healthcare group in the Middle East, highlighted the recovery journey of a 62-year-old stroke patient treated at SEHA’s Salma Rehabilitation Hospital in a case that reflects the impact of coordinated rehabilitation, sustained clinical support, and family involvement in restoring function and independence after severe neurological injury.

The patient experienced an acute ischaemic right middle cerebral artery stroke that left him bedbound with profound muscle weakness. On admission to Salma Rehabilitation Hospital, he required mechanical ventilation, nasogastric feeding, and a tracheostomy tube. His Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was low, and his activity tolerance was minimal.

At the start of rehabilitation, the patient could communicate only using pen and paper. A coordinated care plan was developed to address communication, swallowing, and broader rehabilitation needs, with gradual progress supported through ventilator weaning, speaking valves, and a safe transition to oral feeding following a videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS).

During the course of treatment, the patient experienced setbacks, including temporary renewed ventilator dependence related to lung complications. However, with continued support from his family and the rehabilitation team, he continued progressing through each stage of care.

Rhea Maurice El Achkar, speech therapist/speech & language pathologist at Salma Rehabilitation Hospital, said: “Regaining the ability to communicate was an important turning point in this patient’s recovery. As his ability to express himself improved, we saw greater engagement with therapy, stronger interaction with those around him, and meaningful progress in both swallowing and overall rehabilitation.”

Physiotherapy progressed from bedside exercises and assisted transfers to gym-based mobility training, ultimately supporting the patient’s return to independent walking with safety precautions. By the time of discharge, he had regained significant strength and was participating more fully in daily activities.

Benz Conrad Rago Lasta, a physiotherapist at Salma Rehabilitation Hospital, said: “His progress reflected the value of early, goal-directed physiotherapy delivered in a structured and consistent way. By building strength, balance, and functional mobility step by step, the team was able to support a recovery that helped restore independence and confidence in daily life.”

Today, the patient has regained independent mobility and communication, an outcome that highlights the role of coordinated rehabilitation in helping individuals recover function and confidence after life-altering neurological illness.

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), a flagship hospital in the UAE for serious and complex care and a subsidiary of PureHealth, the largest healthcare group in the Middle East, has recently utilised robotic-assisted surgery to treat a patient suffering from Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (MALS), a rare vascular condition that had remained undiagnosed.

The 32-year-old patient presented to SSMC with severe upper abdominal pain, reflux, nausea, food intolerance and significant weight loss exceeding 40 kilograms. Having undergone multiple consultations and investigations elsewhere without a definitive diagnosis, the patient was referred to SSMC, where specialists identified the underlying cause through a coordinated multidisciplinary assessment.

Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome is a rare condition in which a fibrous band near the diaphragm compresses the celiac artery and surrounding nerves, causing symptoms that can include severe pain after eating, nausea, vomiting, reflux and substantial weight loss. Due to the overlap of symptoms with other gastrointestinal disorders, diagnosis can often be challenging.

The case brought together specialists from Gastroenterology, Vascular Surgery, Radiology and Robotic Surgery, reflecting SSMC’s multidisciplinary approach to managing complex and often difficult-to-diagnose conditions. Following detailed review of cross-sectional imaging and dynamic vascular duplex assessment, the team confirmed significant compression of the celiac artery consistent with MALS. The case was subsequently reviewed through a multidisciplinary framework to exclude alternative gastrointestinal causes and determine the most appropriate treatment pathway.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Mohamed Baguneid, Chair of the Vascular Surgery Division at SSMC, said: “Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome is a rare condition that can often go undiagnosed because its symptoms overlap with a number of more common gastrointestinal disorders. Cases like this highlight the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration, advanced diagnostic capabilities and specialist expertise in identifying the root cause of complex presentations. Bringing together specialists from multiple disciplines allowed us to reach a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan tailored to the patient’s needs.”

Following comprehensive evaluation, the patient underwent robotic-assisted release of the median arcuate ligament, performed by SSMC’s robotic surgery team led by Dr. Salem Al Harthi. The robotic approach enabled precise dissection around the compressed artery and surrounding nerve fibres while minimising surgical trauma. The procedure was completed with minimal blood loss and no complications.

At follow-up, the patient reported being pain-free, tolerating a normal diet and experiencing significant improvement in symptoms, including reflux, nausea and excessive salivation.

Yas Clinic, in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC), has successfully saved the life of a 13-month-old child suffering from a rare and severe inherited immune disorder through an urgent bone marrow transplant from his father, marking another milestone in the UAE’s advancement in bone marrow transplantation and specialized treatment for rare pediatric immune disorders.

From the first months of his life, the child experienced recurrent and severe infections that resulted in multiple prolonged hospital admissions. He was also unable to gain weight normally and suffered from a severe skin condition characterized by widespread redness and continuous peeling, giving his skin an appearance similar to that seen in severe burn cases.

Further medical investigations revealed that the child was affected by a rare inherited immunodeficiency caused by a homozygous mutation in the RAG1 gene and associated with Omenn Syndrome, a rare condition that severely impairs the immune system and leaves patients highly vulnerable to life-threatening infections.

The family’s medical history, which included the loss of a sibling due to a similar condition, accelerated the diagnostic and evaluation process. The child was subsequently referred to the Abu Dhabi Bone Marrow Transplant Program (AD-BMT©) for urgent treatment.

Following comprehensive donor testing, no fully matched sibling donor was available. Tissue matching studies showed that both parents were half-matched donors. Given the urgency of the child’s condition and the high risk posed by ongoing infections, the multidisciplinary team proceeded with a haploidentical bone marrow transplant using stem cells donated by his father.

The transplant was successful, with results showing successful engraftment, gradual restoration of immune function, and significant clinical improvement. The child’s skin condition improved remarkably, recurrent infections resolved, and he was discharged from the hospital while continuing to recover and gain weight.

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi has marked World Organ Donation Day by celebrating the life-changing impact of organ donation on 2,150 patients who have benefited from organ transplants performed in Abu Dhabi since the launch of Hayat – the National Programme for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissue – in 2017 and through June 2026, giving them new opportunities for life and improving their health and quality of life.

Since the launch of the programme, the emirate has been recognised for leading complex UAE and region-first procedures and consistently delivering transplant success rates that match the highest international benchmarks, reinforcing its position as a world-leading destination for healthcare and medical excellence.

In 2025 alone, 631 transplant procedures were performed across the emirate, compared to 290 procedures in 2024, representing an increase of approximately 118%. This milestone reflects the strength of Abu Dhabi’s integrated transplant ecosystem, which brings together advanced infrastructure, state-of-the-art facilities, top-tier medical talent, pioneering innovation, and international collaboration to deliver highly specialised transplant care.

Bringing the full strength of its healthcare network together around emergency and acute care patients, Burjeel Holdings has launched BEACON, the Burjeel Emergency and Acute Care Operational Network. Launched simultaneously at Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi and Burjeel Medical City, the integrated framework connects emergency, critical care, and interfacility transfers into a single, coordinated model across Abu Dhabi facilities.

The launch was marked at an event held at Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi, attended by Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, Chairman and CEO of Burjeel Holdings; Mr. Omran Al Khoori, Member of the Board of Directors at Burjeel Holdings; and senior medical professionals from across the Group.

One Network, One Clinical Standard

BEACON establishes a common framework for emergency and acute care. Rather than treating the Emergency Department as an isolated point of care, the model connects the patient with the wider capabilities of the network based on clinical need. This includes access to specialist and subspecialist teams, intensive care, diagnostics, inpatient services, and advanced treatment capabilities across the two hospitals.

The framework is built around four key areas: acute care access, Emergency Department quality and value, integration between the Emergency Department and the wider hospital, and interfacility transfer and prehospital integration. It also strengthens subspecialty routing, standardized clinical protocols, and technology-enabled clinical decision support.

The framework also includes the progressive use of clinical decision support and predictive tools to help identify high-risk patients earlier, support acute care navigation, and monitor key quality indicators. Clinician oversight remains central to all technology-enabled decision-making.

Following its launch at Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi and Burjeel Medical City, BEACON will progressively extend across Burjeel’s wider acute care network.
